They're only like 3-4 years apart. Which in my opinion, isn't much. At the beginning of the story, because Estelle was malnourished around her stages of puberty, her growth was stunted, which was why she looked so tiny beside Emel, a teenage boy who had already hit puberty and was going through training as a knight.
