Not sure if this helps but I think the kids placing the wish on the tree caused the fox spirit to be revived in the form of that white haired guy who is trying to get close to the girl. Because that 9 tailed fox in the past killed the mountain god, and when he looks at her he sees the mountain god's spirit, so he is here to "save her" from it.
That's what I think is happening
