My theory: Her powers were too strong, so she has to take the pills to suppress them with the side effect of being unable to do the simplest magic -> thus unable to hide her stone.
And since extremely strong Light-Mages (like the one that made the prophecy a few hundred years ago) she might also have some kind of powers of foresight -> what she thinks is knowledge from a novel was actually a vision of the world without her.
