yes anastacius really is dead. but if you recall the flashback of claude's childhood, anastacius was seen staring at something in the garden - a tall hooded figure. theories state that that is late emperor aeternitas, the supposed most powerful emperor of obelian history. its quite possible that since then, anastasius has been controlled by aeternitas and even after his death, he is still being controlled. so if aeternitas was not manipulating him rn, anastasius would just drop lifeless or turn into ash or something
