I think the ex (his name isn't even worth remembering) got off too easy. Funny thing is, author spent like 40+ chapters trying to redeem him but everything he tried was just so infuriating and seemed self-serving in light of the cheating and domestic abuse.

The doctor was right; the ex wasn't sorry for Zhishu at all. Even until the end, he was doing it for himself, to absolve himself of the guilt. The bigger tragedy here is that we don't get to enjoy his lifetime of anguish now that Zhishu is finally at peace.
