So whoever it is knows about your relationship, stalked you to your house and had the audacity to send flowers to your lover. Very sus. From the perspective of the mate who picked up the gift this is either an insult/threat/challenge to him, or possibly evidence of cheating. These could be seen as extreme ideas but the situation is strange enough for those conclusions. Then if he didn't read, he would feel sus or the mate considering he didn't want to show it, like what is there to hide, its ok to have some secrets but this too strange to leave alone.
And to clarify under any normal circumstances you don't touch others mail or gifts. Their situation could have been easily misunderstood. Something similar happened to a relative and it broke her trust in her girlfriend.
