well actually to be honest I'm the same as the red haired. So it's actually not that far away (at least I totally understand him). I kinda like that the author chose to have the one w the bdsm kinks be ashamed or anxious because of this and not as strong as many others out there ;)

It also shows that he is scarred since he decided to be on top for this scene and to be the one to hold the ropes as u would say, granting that he is in charge and has control of the situation which hints that he didn't have that as a sub in his last relationship and was mistreated. He wants to have control over the situation. And as we saw in the visions from the seme before, he is totally a sub and masochist originally. So that really shows his insecurity and trauma.
