Sigh

Of course I feel pity about what happened to him as a kid. And it makes sense why he would treat Patrizia like the enemy, as i think he projects a lot of his feelings he has for his „mother“ (empress) towards Patrizia because of her status in being the empress. Exactly how he tries to protect his mistress so fiercely because he couldn’t protect his own birth mother, who was his fathers mistress. So I think his behavior has a lot to do with these women’s position in his life. But he now feels confused because Patrizia seems to have more qualities of his own birth mother (the victim of jealousy and almost killed for it), and his mistress acting more like the former empress did. I understand it’s not easy to compute when you realize that characteristics in a person you chose to love and protect, are more akin to the person you feared and hate. I think this causes some brain freeze in him, that Patrizia and his mistress act opposed to what he expected and learned from experience about their formal positions. I think this is the major reason why he doesn’t take action. Still, spoiler......................I don’t see how Patrizia would forgive him when she comes to know she was only chosen because she’s barren, as that gives him ample reason to dispose of her and make the mistress his empress. So Patrizia’s death was decided upon right then. Especially with what happened in the original timeline. Her sister and her whole family were executed because he wanted them to die. Maybe not really her family but with the „treason“ she was accused of, her family members were sacrificial lambs. Maybe they were even killed so they wouldn’t raise objections and rally other nobles around their cause. When he killed her sister, he was still the same person that Patrizia knows now. And I don’t think Patrizia‘s sister was any less kind or lovely. The only mistake she made was falling in love with him and showing her jealousy. Which of course, yet again, fed the emperor’s delusion about how the former empress was driven to despicable acts due to her own jealousy. I would really love to get more info on what happened in the former timeline. But I think we would hate him even more.

From what I heard in the comments, both choosing her for being barren and the execution weren't his decisions at all, but results of Rosamund's plotting. In the other timeline, she had a lot more control over him bc Patrizia's sister wasn't as good at revealing Rosamund's true face as Patrizia is.

Thanks for the info. But that makes me dislike him even more, if that makes sense? I would have respected him more if he actually was an all aware villain, instead of Rosamond‘s pussy whipped pawn. And how can it be that he as the emperor he didn’t decide to execute them but his mistress did? Doesn’t make much sense to me from a storytelling point of view. That’s my gripe with this webtoon. The story tries to absolve him from any responsibility to make him into an acceptable love interest for Patrizia. And it’s not even necessary because the moral ambiguity as to why Patrizia would fall for such a man, would be much more interesting to me. It’s definitely more interesting to me than her falling for such a mentally weak and easily manipulated man. And Patrizia‘s sister not being able to show him Rosamond‘s real face behind the facade still doesn’t make him look good. It makes him look foolish. Rosamond was really aggressive with Patrizia from the beginning. Overly obvious. So I would assume that she wasn’t much different with Patrizia’s sister. Something the emperor should have caught on to. I would respect the story more if they just came out and said that he willfully ignored his mistress‘s schemes because it served him as well because he wanted her to become his empress.
