I've noticed this trend in some yaoi manga, when girls/women are "rejected" they always slap the guy and/or run away crying. Why do they feel that confessing to a guy demands an automatic "yes" and if not, they feel insulted? (Though I've seen a lot of men act like this, honestly.) I find this over-emotional portrayal of women amusing and at the same time irritating. If a man smacked a woman for turning him down, that would be sexual harassment, abuse, or physical assault (though some egotistical men with violence issues do take it as far as rape), but because it's a woman hitting a man, it's okay. Sorry for the long rant.
In Heart no Kakurega, main character gets dumped by his girlfriend after she finds out he lost everything when his apartment was burglarized. Yeah, yaoi women are scandalous, shallow, self-centered, money-hungry, materialistic. Everything men (and decent women) hate in a woman. They abandon and abuse their children, slap their crushes after being rejected, slap and storm out on poor confused boys who can't get/keep an erection,"kya kya" and gather in hordes around their "princes," or they're clueless, weak, constantly being cheated on, etc, etc. These kinds of girl characters are made to make us root for our favorite yaoi couple. I love being pleasantly surprised when I find a yaoi manga with strong, funny, and smart women, but they are the minority.
It's not just yaoi women. I've honestly found that the majority of females in all japanese manga tend to be extremely unrealistic (and that's a huge understatement). It's one of the main reasons I read yaoi. Women only appear as side characters. Very few have large roles unless they are put into an antagonist position (or something like a love triangle), and love triangles happen to be one of my least favorite scenarios in a romantic story. Every now and then you'll come across a really cool female character, but it doesn't happen very often. Even in shounen or shoujo the girls are really annoying. I mean who would scream and hit a boy for accidentally tripping in front of you just because you have a skirt on? I would ask someone to shoot me if I ever acted like these girls do.
I know I am late to this party, but I couldn't agree with you more! I was so confused when the kid in the last chapter politely refused the chick and she kicked the shit out of him. Like, wtf? Just because you have a vagina doesn't give you an automatic acceptance from any guy you choose or the right to assault him for refusing your advance.
BTW, you forgot to list "nosy" and "meddlesome". I read one manga where the girl wouldn't believe the guy had a male lover unless he "proved" it to her. Seriously?! Now his sex life has to be her personal fap material? Too creepy. She ended up being straight up psycho stalker material in the end.
Finally someone said this! Yes, I'm getting tired of these kinds of female characters. That's why I'm now trying to find manga with strong women in it, not whiny, materialistic, weak, self-centered, etc. It doesn't have to be Yaoi. I'm just tired of any manga portraying women in that way. (● ̄(エ) ̄●)
I always look for and make a special note of manga with strong, more realistic female characters. Another one of my biggest pet peeves is all of the "damsel in distress" characters. I don't know a single woman that wouldn't fight with all their might rather than just wait for someone to save them if they were put into some of the situations these characters are put into. I'm not saying there aren't any people like that, but I think they are the exception rather than the norm. To be completely fair, it isn't just manga that has an overabundance of these types of characters. They appear fairly often in western writing, too. I'm a strongly independent single mother, and I honestly find these characters fairly offensive.
i love anime and manga but im a hardcore femnist (/TДT)/ so when i see shit like that i get so mad but then when i go to sleep i imagne them to be strong indepent woman lol i guess that satifies me on a subconcius lvl but
i think they should change the wa they portray women its not like its gonna hurt anything it might actually cause more woman to watch anime and manga(๑•ㅂ•)و✧
So true. Shoujo especially drives me up the frickin' wall. I end up just wanting to slap some sense into them. And the men/boys in shoujo aren't much better - the rich boy, the prince, the bad boy, the "one who takes control," any combination of the previous and many more that I haven't listed. They've all slept with tons of girls but picks the one virgin to fall in love with, etc., etc., blah, blah...
Speaking on the last story, How did he deserve to Get abused because he didn't want to cheat or get comforted? These Yaoi stories trip me out sometimes.
