It's azuma at wataru's sister's plan so that wataru will be freed from the family bcuz if that happens azuma will inherit the company and wataru can build his own company and be free. Azuma is sacrificing his self for the sake of wataru. But didn't happen in the end since wataru and azuma became a couple.
I dont think it was an illusion since both characters acknowledged the situation.
