This is definitely a thing. BL stereotypes become harmful if the readers base their attitude towards actual gay men from what they have come across in yaoi. Fiction isn't always just fiction. Fiction are ideas and we can let unrealistic ideas get the best of us if we're not careful. Yaoi fans have a poor reputation because they obnoxiously push dumb BL stereotypes on gay men.

I understand what you’re saying and it’s definitely a problem. But on a more positive note, I’ve been seeing people more aware of it and also more interested in mangas where the ukes don’t fit in this stereotype. So there’s hope (⌒▽⌒).
Still, there’s a large portion of the community that is like that. There’s nothing wrong with having a type of fetish, but if affects how you see and treat gay men in real life, that’s a real issue.

I think a person that fetishizes BL is someone who’s entire “opinion” is based on fiction. Like you just said, the bottom is always smaller cutter and the top has to be this super masculine person, and it’s just like no????? Literally bottom and top have nothing to do with the physical appearance.
But the real problem is when people start using this in real life, it’s just weird to start shipping some random real life person and be life “we would definitely be the bottom” like what’s the problem with you????? Yeah but after sticking around here reading hundreds you realize there are so many types of BL. I believe some artists make name because of their particular type of plot in the beginning and that is what selling. But all artists have variety plots and styles. Some have it all musculine. Some are like usual shojo with uke instead of a girl. Then there is omega verse.. Which is mostly impossible to try to put it together with reality.

No no no the characters are like human, even though they're not real they have a psychological effect on us and that's not even the point its that people are stereotyping even if its fictional it's annoying.

Any story has a bit of reality, because any trope, cliche, plot comes from something that happened or didnt happen. and the truth is, people are forcing their opinions on real people due to that. in Thai BL series, the characters are called wife and husband which refers to their sex positions. As much as i love bl, this irks me so badly. Due to that, people refer to those actors/characters as husband and wife. This makes me think "What the Fuck? Is he a woman? Because the actor plays a role where he happens to bottom he's stuck with that word forever? And then making jokes about him getting pregnant like OMG." And what happens is people don't realize the extent of this as they say we are just saying it for fun, we know he is a man and none of this is going to happen. But people don't realize that unconsciously they have already assigned this kind of a role to this actor. And so they ignore anything that changes this role of his and screams when he doesn't.
