I don’t think it’s supposed to be an accurate deptiction of bdsm in this chapter. The author clearly knows that safe words are a thing, and this chapter isn’t supposed to by sexy or appealing. This is Chris reliving his trauma, trying to be the one in control- granted it’s not healthy for either, but Chris is re-living his abuse. I think you forget that we’re barely even into the characters at all. There’s so much progression and development that needs to happen. The entire point is for us to realize that Chris is being like his ex- and hopefully for the both of them to be able to work through that realization.
