I think that you didn't understand the reason why the princess is in the battlefield in the first place. She's there to boosts the moral of her soldiers and show that even though she's just a princess and no expertise in combat, her mere presence represent that although their kingdom has fallen they will rise and take back their homeland.
And that's what you've missed while reading the current arc
