I thought they both drunk and see went for him? And I guess she doesn't consider it rape but the pressure of marriage.
He really was pushing and as we've seen in this chapter he really has to work on character so up until her freezing up and lying about her injury, I understand. So she needs to heal and work on her character.
My guess is this story will be about the two working through their issues
so i can get why people are upset with ripley hell even I was, like I had said before just let the marriage go on without a hitch and, then if he found someone he truly loved and wanted to divorce her then go with the flow. however, from her standpoint, she basically was r@ped because you can't give consent if you're under the influence.
HOWEVER ( again ) we don't know what the laws in their country so we may be calling it the r word but in their country maybe they have no such concept of the r word, of course, ripley would because she came from Korea but ya'll have to remember that back in the day it wasn't really looked at a r word much like today.
that being said, I honestly do not feel sorry for her whatsoever, even though the duke was pushing this marriage based on 'their first night' which she could not consciously consent to he was still pushing it because maybe he did fall in love with her but didn't want her to leave him so he kept using that as an excuse, now that he's found out she was lying like it was her just desserts.
if she had properly explained the situation instead of freezing up maybe it wouldn't have been so bad but in her situation, you can't really tell him you're not the person he thinks you are because he will think you're lying. in conclusion, she does but does not deserve the hate she's getting.
