Pen names arent explicitly intended to hide the person's identity. It happens often in cases where an author wants to produce a different genre/topic in their work; using their own name (aka the one they originally write with) could cause readers to incorrectky associate the usual theme with their new work. And so you'd get people viewing the work with preconceived notions the author may not want them to have. Essentially, it's a way to put distance between distinct bodies of work by the same author. Does that make sense?
