She was the late empress whom Johannes had loved. Shuli and the late empress’s relationship was not yet mentioned in this spoilers. since Shuli resembled her a lot, he chose her and marry her. It was intentional for him, I also read he searched for him and there was purpose that was not love when he took her in. The cardinal panda eyes was in love with Shuli but could not believe with what he was feeling; so he did everything he could to remove her from his heart. Like the phrase, if I can’t have you, suffer. Or something. He was twisted through and through.

- As you can see in the manhwa, 5 of them as close friends that are the emperor, the late empress, johannes, both nora parents. And as you can guess both emperor and johannes fall in love with the late empress. But how the late empress end up marrying the emperor is not yet being told. "Johannes stare at the potrait of the late empress for a long time" is a sad symbolic of how he is still in love with her yet he cant fulfill it. A longing.
-The cardinal did fall in love with shuli. It is love at the first sight (because in the novel, shuli is describe as a very beautiful woman). So this sorry excuse of a man, did all that because he wanted shuli for himself so he wanted to destroy all the men on shuli's side. If he can't have her then no one can have her. HE IS A CREEPY PSYCHO!! If you notice one of the scene about the cardinal where he is praying while there are old lashes on his back. He did it to himself because he yearn for shuli with his body.
-Eventhough shuli resemble the late empress a lot but it is said that they had no relation. The look-a-like is just coincidence or we can say fate.
Could someone explain to me why johannes was looking at the portrait? Who was the lady in it again? And does that one dark circled priest contiue to go after shuli? T^T
