Claude and Jeanette's mother didn't have a relationship. I think this was explained in one of the chapters. Jeanette is Claude's brother's child, not his.

Yah, that's how I remember it too. Any leftover feelings Claude could've had for Jeanette's mother would be overridden by his love for his daughter's mother I'm sure. He seemed to seriously care for her, even risking the black magic situation to see her/save her.
Claude never love Jeanette mother, they just politically engaged, when Claude saw her sleeping with his brother he didn't even blink an eye. Claude only ever love Diana/Athy mother, he never even touched any woman in his harem, it was Diana who stubbornly reach out to Claude no matter how many times he push her away. The reason why he keep Jeanette mother portrait is to Erase the memories of Diana, he is using black magic to erase Diana but it took times to complete so he is using that portrait like some kinda charm
penelope was the third person to ever abandon claude. first would be his father the emperor, then anastacius. she was the trigger that made him wake up and overthrow his brother. he didn't particularly love her but he was entranced by her considering she whispered lies to him about how she'd never leave her side and some shit.
