although the prince said he was justified, she didn't appear to be acting at all. she was just as afraid of the monster tree saying it wanted to protect her.. as she was of the man attempting to cut her down, I noticed she was also surprised by it bowing to her and that doesnt make any sense if she were acting. in the end.. she even tried in desperation to reach out for the prince's help before being killed by him.
I dont get the impression she was lying, and if thats true, he cut down a innocent woman who's only crime was not being aware that she (either was a witch but didn't know..) or magic was placed on her somehow to fool the tree & prince into thinking she was one, and there's some deeper conspiracy going on..
either way her father looks so grief stricken, I feel bad for him.
I don’t know if you noticed how they Emphasize the jewelry... especially her necklace, I felt the same as you, that she was innocent but maybe the empress put some blood or something so that the Prince felt something off and kill her.
