Human lives mean nothing to me, in fiction and reality. But right now, those are fictional characters so what's the big fuss about. People seem to be unable to separate the two. Also, it was said that Paradis has valuable resources so I doubt other nations were ignorant to the fact that they existed and most definitely would want to invade because of that.
