You’re so right. I’m a fan of some groups and bands but I would never go to such lengths to idolize someone and put them into a narrative I’ve created in my head. Also, a lot people who enter sex work aren’t necessarily there because they want to. There are many other cases where people have resorted to sex work because they need money to stay alive, but your point is still valid. As far as people being conservative, he’ll yeah they are. They’re quick to judge the heterosexual manhwa because I’m sure most people here read mostly yaoi so they end up comparing it. Even though I can understand why you’re upset, I think that if that’s the mentality of most people in Korea, then it kinda fits unfortunately. I’m not saying it’s right bc technically it’s none of our business, but we don’t always have to agree with every step of a story so there’s really no point.
But let’s not lie and say as if this reaction although comedic relief is absolutely how a lot of these idol fans view celebrities? It’s scary to think how possessive and dehumanizing fans can be when they build up an illusion of somebody they don’t know and never bothered to truly know. Just to fit into their little world and be perfect.
The reason there’s such a strong reaction in the comments about this chapter is how close to home her reaction could be with REAL fans.
Also arguing that sex work is normalized in the U.S. and accepted is kind of a lie. It’s barely decriminalized in some states and sex work and is still stigmatized earning young women terms like “thot” and “belonging to the streets.” And South Korea isn’t any better, there’s a literal term they use for people they deem wh*res and it’s basically being called a “mop”.
Honestly, this MC was kind of annoying to me with her attitude and whatnot before but this takes the cake. Especially since so many people on this site are quite “conservative” and are quick to label people like that. It’s sucks even more because I’m a fan of the author’s other work Missing O and it features sexually liberated women who are not afraid of having sex and having lots of it. In fact the main girl has been called the exact terms this MC is using on her idol. It’s a bit jarring seeing such a switch on opinion when the gender roles are flipped.
