Tbh, minorities in China are treated way worse than the Han zu (Chinese nationality), even tho they are also citizens of China. So even without the tragic backstory, I could see him going through a lot and having to walk an extra mile to be where he is.
Yeah, thinking about it a little beyond my initial reaction, it makes a little more sense as to why he is so on guard against our MC.
