Pretty much, they talk this way because reputation is very important in high society.
Give the illusion that they’re so full of grandeur that they would never outright insult someone without that person causing something, kind of how at a job a someone with a customer would say something to make you read between the lines to really understand they’re dragging you without everyone around you getting involved, the Princess and others like her, talk trash behind pretty words for their image but are just about as sweet as a poison dart frog is not deadly.
She asks her to play to try to humiliate her she thought Estelle couldn't play a difficult piece so if Estelle played really well the princess would be pissed and try to make it seem like Estelle was trying to oustshine her then Estelle would be gossiped about and be made the bad guy
