i look at ratings when i look for something very specific, but other than that i give the story a go if it's 8.0 or up. i can't really rely on ratings tho bc sometimes i find really good comics and the rating is low
I usually don't read comics that are lower than 8,6. My favorite stories are shounen ai, which means that I like soft love stories. When i see that the rating is around 7,5 I presume that the story has things like rape, or an awful translation.
I rarely read anything below 9.0. It depends on your taste but most yaoi (bl) under this rating often have r@pe or not clear consent sexual activities. Sometimes its the art or if the story doesn't have a clear plotline. If the story is 8.9 then it just means that people have been rating the story with 4 stars.
You're missing out on a lot of very good stories. Most of the 9 above here are smut. Maybe a few years ago that would apply, but now with the proliferation of ripped licensed webtoons here that are mostly smut, the ratings have become meaningless.

I just learned today that people actually look at ratings. I honestly never trusted those ratings because of myself. When I rate a Manga/manhwa it's when I want to subscribe to them and keep them (if I don't rate, the site unsubscribes for me). So since it's almost allways uncompleted works, I put 5 stars by default
