Not really that much. They're well off. It's just their greed talking. It's somehow a very common trope reading Chinese novels especially with wealthy families like this. I actually felt bad at first too but then nyeh.
Don't get me wrong, I hate the way the aunt and uncle behave, but it does make me wonder how much they were discriminated against to become this rotten.
