Some deaf people find it uncomfortable to talk since they cabt hear themselves. It really depends on how comfortable they are. He probably made noise during sex because he wasnt really thinking about it.
Since he also had a scar on his head, he could have suffered damage to the part of his brain that controls some motor functions including talking. He may be able to make noises but not form words with his mouth. Just another thing that can happen in an accident as bad as the one he seemed to have gone through.

yeah but its mostly because they were born deaf can cant distinguish sounds so the speech sometime is wrong but he wasnt deaf and knew how to speak before his accident should he be more comfortable talking at least a bit... maybe controling the volume is hard.. that i can understand like if you have head phones on and cant hear anything and start talking it may end up really loud but i dont see how if will effect speech
I think that the author went by with the combo deaf/communicate through writing and didn't think it more lol otherwise I think we would have at least one bubble of him thinking something of why he doesn't speak
I also loved the deaf x novelist couple best. Although I didn't understand why he was also mute. I thought the accident a year ago made him only deaf. Why can't he talk then? During sex he was able to voice noises and was not just panting.
But well, still a cute story :)
