As long as you can love that person for a long time why does the gap matter? Who are we to judge them?
Anyway, I have a feeling that the new kid may be Haru's cousin. Maria is Haruko's sister so Haru's aunt, which make them two cousins. Anyhow, progress is very slow in this series. I kind of hoping they'd finish up ren backstory and at least concluded on Haru's memory issues.
