How do you feel about lewding characters in high school?

Nichuchu November 18, 2020 7:13 am

I'm not going to say much, I just would like to hear thoughts about it since there's a lot of controversy I see on the topic. I would like to say that I am not talking about any loli and shota characters, but high school or late teen characters (that for the most part do not have child-like features), I think that lewding loli and shota characters isn't morally ok in any way and don't really want to have a conversation about that.

I'm talking like high school characters, high schoolers fucking each other, them being extremely lewd and sexualized.. let's talk about it. And please consider both sides, some manga/anime that I know are popular like yarichin, BNHA, (not romantic in any way but some characters are often sexualized) haikyuu, SAO, eromanga sensei, high school of the dead, etc.

Let's talk about it!

honestly for awhile i never really minded bc high school aged characters/characters that look like they should be in high school are lewded the most on the internet?? but now that people have really been talking about it i think it's equally morally wrong to lewd high school aged character despite any physical feature. they're still minors, no matter what way you look at it.

Yeah sure let’s talk. About bnha and haikyuu characters I saw a lot of djs them being sexualised. It’s not ok because their still 16 and minors.

since anime comes from Japan we can't really have them change so it fits our laws and morals but we can choose not to read or watch this shit

I’m kinda conflicted about it, because on the one hand, they are underage and they are being sexualized anyway for the enjoyment of people. However, they are fictional characters that people care about and are still above the age of consent. Teens have sex all the time and it’s not like we can just ignore that and will it away. I’m not sure if this gives people a free pass to sexualize these characters though. Then again, there is the whole, freedom of creativity argument and that it’s a way to show appreciation. Like I said, I’m conflicted

My mindset is that whatever is fiction stays separate from reality. Lewding those high school characters is ok in anime/manga etc. But if it they were real people or even scripted live action dramas, that shit wouldn’t slide. Like how merder in fiction can slide but in really life practices would not. So I say wifus/husbandos pass as you can differentiate fiction from reality.

I think this is how I end up viewing a lot of things too. If it’s fiction and just drawn or written, then I may waver for a bit, but I’ll be mostly ok with it. However, if it’s anything live-action, then I’m definitely nope-ing out of there. I just end up feeling way too uncomfortable. I think it’s also about becoming desensitized to certain things as well. Like, sex in comics, mangas, or plain books between teen characters is becoming so common that I just think it’s normal, even though it may not be that great. Even in new YA novels, it’s becoming increasingly common for the two teen characters to have sex at one point. Many authors rationalize this saying that teens have sex all the time and it’s not something they can just ignore if they want to make real and relatable novels. The can’t make it clean just for it to be safe for all audiences. It may not be the same since it’s only written and not actual pictures, but is it really that different? If it’s ok in written form, then why not in drawing and comics? It might be seen as being ok only because we have become so used to the idea of seeing such things in that form but not in the other.

Sure we can talk about that, I personally think it's wrong because there underage (unless there in 3rd years) and it gets justified too much. It shouldn't really be justified but there are times when it shows us a message. In the manga of given yuki and mafyuu embrace each other because they love each other. It shows a message to the reader that they truly were in love with each other.

Now, let talk about the bad things. In Haikyuu people sexualize Kuroo way too much as well as Ushijima. Some people don't realize that there homeschooler and make R18 fan art. Manga kuroo is different from anime Kuroo. Most people sexualize him despite knowing he’s a minor in the anime. Anime like haikyuu or BNHA weren’t created to be sexualized in the first place.

Anime like DxD or Food Wars where the female characters have bodies of JAV models and the guys are basically every girl's ideal J-Pop Star in anime like Free or most Shōnen Ai shows (shojo).

At the end of the day lots anime/manga are targeted to the teen audience. This is also marketed towards adults because it is seen to be an escape from the awful Japanese work culture. So a lot of characters are in their late teens. This is why there is a market for adults being sent back to live as teenagers. It is a quick way to give your audience a sense of escape

Using the excuse “There not real” is also kinda ignorant. Just because there not real doesn't matter. It is the fact that people are sexualize them. It is like saying “Abused is not okay but when it comes to a fictional character it's okay” use a better excuse than just that.

In my OWN opinion (I'm writing this when I should be going to sleep) it depends on whenever I accept it or do not.

Again sorry for my bad grammar!

Hi, thank you for such a thoughtful reply!

I agree that the excuse that "its not real" doesn't really cut it for me. I used to use it as an excuse too, so I am guilty, but the more I thought about it, the more it just seemed like just an excuse to be a perv and shift the blame instead of taking responsibility for maybe having an attraction to characters that are underage. When I think of other things like how people say "oh there's rape in this manga, I can't read it" I wonder why that doesn't stand for the sexualization of minors too.

Other countries seem to have a morally grey area of consent, but I know the norm is 18. I feel like as people get older, they realize how young 15, 16, and 17 truly is. However, I acknowledge that teens around this age are allowed to make their own decisions like choosing to have sex and making adult decisions with their lives.

I feel like if art is just used to sexualize minors or meant to be smutty, why not just age them up? Its there for the viewer to get excited, right? So then just make them adults... or else it just seems like being underage is meant to appeal to the viewer, which feels somewhat wrong. However, if its in a "coming-of-age" type story where the characters are experiencing new emotions like expressions of love or exploring their sexuality (or literally used for a purpose) then I feel like its something that is more acceptable. ヾ(❀╹◡╹)ノ~
