no i don't think that's the case,, from what i remember, in the novel maxi talks about how riftan is handsome guy and people liked him,, there was even one bit where she mentioned that even her step sister who looked down on his social status would blush after looking at him,,, that whole bit was just her assuming that riftan has been with someone before because everyone likes him
