I think the idea is more "discovering your actual preferences" than "becoming gay". I mean it's not like he was ever happy in a straight romantic and/or sexual relationship, he's the sort of guy who sees life as a list of checkboxes you need to check to be "successful" and one of those checkboxes is "have a pretty girlfriend". The only things that really alludes to anything other than "learning more about your sexual preferences" the name of the thing and one kind of bad line from the same.
Using the idea that people can "turn" or "become" gay, a talking point that's still used to discriminate against lgbt people to this day, as a concept for bullshit like this is fucking disgusting.
