But it annoyed me for some reason when when Yi was dismissive of the idea of his mom not telling him about his family.

    that really bugged me too , like he couldve had a slight realization like "oh maybe they were'nt dead" but he was just straight up like fake news, clickbait, next

    It might be a cultural difference. Growing up in an asian household, my parents have always been quite dismissive/ vague about issues they didn't want to disclose and I've never questioned.....they sort of beat it out of you. The general consensus was 'it is what it is', not something I should worry over (or often said, 'not your business, how're your grades doing?') haha

    It's not a cultural difference. It happens in the US the issue with keeping family like that away is how you end up dating family. Just dont like how they make Yi yun is shut off from certain things ig ┑( ̄Д  ̄)┍

    Honestly, it seemed like a pretty normal thing that the parents had kept their own families hidden from their kids. I mean, I have cousins who don't even know who their own uncles and aunts are yet other people know. It's like, an open secret sort of? I guess it's something cultural but who knows
