Evan's strong inferiority complex was the main cause of their rivalry, Niro just pushed back the amount he needed to to not get hurt.
Evan saw his mistakes and is trying to redeem himself, which is going pretty well.
Niro also saw how pathetic he was acting and decided to attempt to pick himself up which is what we are seeing now.
