The chef made extra food because he was worried that he'd run out. The bride told him to pack some of the leftovers for her cop friend because he enjoys good food and on some days he just doesn't have the time to cook and eat because of his work. So the chef said he'd pack the leftovers for him.
When the cop headed back to take the leftovers despite being tired and wanting to go home, he came across the chef drinking wine, getting drunk and sobbing over the groom whom he was clearly in love with.
