I think the kind married the empress for political reasons but was unable to have a child with her, so the next time he married it was for love and she was a queen (one down from empress). They’re the male leads parents (I think) I don’t actually think the empress has any of her own children with the emperor? Although someone correct me if I’m wrong. But yes the empress is politically more powerful than the second wife.

Any case Ian the Duke is actually the son of the last Emperor, making his brothers with the current Emperor.

And the reason why he can inherit the throne since he has the bloodline. Also the King has no offspring either because he can't have one or his wife can't.

Which honestly makes me think that Liz did something to the Emperor or his wife to make them unable to have kids cause then she can put her family as the new rulers.

Since if the Emperor doesn't have kids and if Ian is unfit to become the next Emperor then the only family fit to rule the kingdom would be Liz's family .

I mean this is my understanding so I could be wrong but no Liz is the Emperor's mother not his wife

The Previous Emperor and Empress, Ian parent died when he is still a kid so his uncle the Current Emperor take the throne instead, but he wish to give the throne back to Ian, so his wife Empress Ilya choose not to have children and think of Ian as her own child. But there is no way the nobles would leave them alone, they would assume Empress Ilya is infertile, so the Emperor would have no choice but to marry Empress Liza and have children with her for political stability.
