i see this trope everywhere bc.. its not really a trope, blackmail is very real. most people dont want the entire world to see them naked and in a humiliating state which is understandable? i wouldnt want to either
I mean I understand how that would make you hesitate, but I would think getting raped or murdered would be much worse than being exposed. And so often in these stories the victim chooses the rape/murder route. Which usually leads to more incriminating footage for further blackmail.
I never understood how the existence of photos/video stopped victims from calling the cops. The cat is already out the bag, and at least the buck stops with the cops if they get it as opposed to letting the criminals spread your image all around town. Also, that's hard evidence of your assault.
Maybe this is a cultural difference that's lost in translation cus I only ever see this trope in Asian stories.
