This was well said! I feel the exact same way about being slightly disappointed if the author decides to go after the weight loss route. Don't get me wrong, it is good if the mc wants to change for himself, but the fact that there are hardly any stories about self-love and learning to stay as who you are, especially for those that are struggling with their weight, makes it sad.
Again, the people aren't upset that he's losing weight, but upset about having a character finding love until they become skinny again. Why can't it be normalized even if he were on the bigger side?
I hope the author doesn't do that, but I wouldn't even be surprised at this point.
thank you and i totally agree with everything you’ve added on! even if this story ends up that way i really hope to find stories (esp cute BL or any lgbt stories in general!) in the future that show someone happily finding love without having to lose weight first :’) i’m sure must be some hidden gems out there!
i think there is more nuance to why people are upset that he might lose weight than some of these commenters seem to believe. yes he did gain the weight due to trauma and him losing it may represent ridding himself of that trauma, that makes sense narratively of course. but the bigger picture here is that BL and a lot of manga in general just does not have fat characters, and i have rarely read any stories where the fat character doesn’t become skinny in the end.
so even though him losing weight makes sense story wise, it’s like why did the author choose to make that the obvious choice instead of letting fat people see themselves in a story where the mc stays fat the whole time AND is still loved, gets to have sex, etc? i’m sure there are also people out there who can relate to this specific mc, but for others it just ends up being the same song and dance where they once again are not allowed to exist in media. obviously this manga is not done yet so this is all just speculation and the author might even approach this with a lot of care, but i feel like it’s unfair to say that people are not allowed to feel frustrated just because he gained that weight due to trauma.
TLDR: mc is not a real person, all of the mc’s thoughts and actions were written by someone with bias, so even if it seems that him getting skinny is a logical progression, a person (again, with bias) wrote it to be that way.
