That’s exactly my thought too. He’s trying to protect him and give him a chance to love. In previous chapters he did say he would always look out for him.

I kinda think Cain wanted to protect mr door guy ( i forgot his name), not that he didn't want to go back to him, but more that he knows there'll be drawbacks to their relationships, so by setting him free, he can live a "normal life" without being constantly in 'danger'.
Kinda like if you let the one you love go because you know they'll be safer without you, and instead of telling the love of your life with the worry they might try to stop / help in the dangerous situation.
