Maxi never told him, he knew first hand. He caught the duke abusing Maxi. He calmly asked the duke what he is doing and the duke was like eh? This a normal thing to do when disciplining a child. So he asked Riftan to talk it outside and Riftan said yes, he calmly followed the duke and suddenly grabbed the chair and went balistic on the duke. He almost killed him but his knights tried their best to restrain Riftan because it would be a grave sin to harm a noble let alone a duke.
