Have common sense "hedges."

I had a list of what I needed in a husband, character-wise. Been amrried a long time, very happily. But on my first telephone call with him, I made it clear who I would and would not date. He fit the bill. I made it clear no sex unless married. He approved of that. I showed im my face without makeup so there's not tricks.

And I told him that if he cheated, I was out of there, not excuses, done.

He never showed anything but respect and never flirted with anyone, even those flirting with him.
He showed self-control and respect and affection and generosity.

So, then I introduced him to the women in my family. He had to pass THEIR test. If they said, nope, then nope.

They all loved him.

Now, we've been married more than 30 years and it's been great. Better than I dreamed.

But you can't just let your heart rule. It's heart + brain, not just heart.

The heart can be incredibly stupid. So, use your brain. Don't sacrifice your integrity for a man. EVER.
