The sad thing is all 3 of them realized platonically hey wouldn't but none of thought they could translate it into romantic. Though it could be cause Yuuji ws the only one who started with "as long as the one I love is happy and safe". Souma was very much torture the competition and Kanade was "oh no competition my world is crumbling".

Maybe not wishful thinking as the fact Kanade did fall in love with Yuuji the possibility is there. But it all falls on Souma of whether it would have worked or failed. So I also agree with the Souma part.
I would have rated this a five if the three of them ended up deciding to turn their friendships into a relationship between them. Author missed an opportunity for all three of them to realize that they couldn't live without each other. It felt unfair.
