Based on his facial reactions, I would assume there were points where he was scared, but probably not bc of the reasons you or I would be. He was probably just paranoid bc he doesnt like people he can't get a grasp on and manipulate, if I remember correctly.
He was probably upset about the doc bc maybe deep down he has feelings for him still? Or he did mention that the doctor was his only friend- instead of being sad at the funeral, he just put on a brave face and disassociated.
I agree though. I was really impressed with this story. When I began reading it I thought, "I don't think imma like this very much." But by the end I was so happy to have read it. I love murder mysteries so much. Especially ones like this where I can't predict who is gonna die when. I mean I expected the doctor to die. But I actually thought that Clark was going to die and then Alex would be arrested or would end himself- I was really surprised and excited by the ending.
on that note, have you read criminal interview? It isn't as extreme as this one i don't think, but i do believe it's worth a read. Nursery mystery just like this one.

Right he was able to completely act the part in the beginning to make him fall in love then give another mind blowing act when he kidnapped him so that Alex would give him just enough freedom from him to kill him keep in mind without breaking his promise to Alex to never leave him and stay with him til his death.
IMO Clark is more crazy than Alex, he was able to dissociated from his emotions and took on a serial killer. Wow Clark, I don't known to be scared of you or be utterly impressed. I didn't care much for the Doc we kinda knew what was coming for him. But I was a bit surprised Clark still had some lingering feelings for him. As for Alex, yes he had a bad childhood, yes I understand why he killed, so his ending was fitting. It almost felt like Clark was the hero in this? He brought down Alex the way Alex didn't want to end up. Alex wanted recogizsation, and ended with nada. As if his killing didn't matter, because the public will not know his name. As the Master manipulator, he really managed the Tommy issue smoothly, I do wonder... If he intentionally over shared with GPS and etc if he thought he was going to die Or it was his plan to get away unscathed. And why was he so shocked that they found the doc's body? He knew the Doc died already, was he shocked from his disappointment in Alex's reason for killer or truly shocked that he caused the murder?.. I wonder...if Clark was ever truly scared or lacked control with his relationship with Alex, we know it's not love, fine. He did wavier with Doc, OK. But with Alex... Was he 100% in control of the situation, even when he seemed to be not in control.?..hmmm. Question is did Alex had a chance to win this game at all going up against Clark?
