The adult was part of supernatural beings who had the power the write someone's life. He "created" the story of the boy who writes poems; he knew everything about the boy because he is the one who thought of it. But as he got closer he realized humans are more complex than mere words on a page and half thoughts conveyed, so he continued to meet with his creation. The organization he worked for told him to not get in contact first, but since he continued and ultimately slept with the boy (uhhh that bit was sketchy) he was kicked out of the supernatural org, turned into a human where his job was part of an acting troupe. They made it seem like his author life for X years was all a dream. (We know its real bc we saw his "editor" smiling outside at the very end).
