To be honest, I don't think he's completely stepping back, I think this IS a character development. It's just realistic, two steps forward, one step back. It would be very unrealistic if he just did a permanent 180, the story would end. People with such deeply rooted problems go back to their ways very often, especially before new connection in their brain develops. This slow burn torments me, but I do love it though lol
