My interpretation was that she was in a haze because of her illness and that her responses were "muted" from her own perspective - like she didn't even hear herself speak.

Ha! I was wondering the exact same thing.
I thought it was because she was sick, so she said those things kinda, but it wasn't audible. But he knows her, so he understood her.
That makes more sense, of course. It’s just normally authors put hazy mumblings in odd shaped bubbles with weaker fonts and all thoughts in square boxes or thought bubbles. So I wasn’t sure if the author was trying to show us something, lol.

When ebony was sick and the duke was comforting her. She didn't say anything did she? Cause every dialogue was in box like as if she was talking to herself. So can the duke read others thoughts?
