I was wondering the same thing... I don't understand why she faked her death... If in the end she had to come back...

Potential ideas I had was that she actually wasn't healthy or someone was out for her life or maybe she just didn't have the personality or ability to climb up the social ladder? But all of them, especially the third don't truly make sense for me yet

Maybe the part where she is sick and had to retire from the public or that someone is after her can be applied here. Actually they are great explanation. But the second one it's unlikely for me... Because the main female hasn't said much about someone attempting her life in the past or something similar so ... I will excluded.
Anyway There still be many theories here to explore like: she had a baby out of marriage and to hide it her father sent her away. Like some Victorian novel lol

maybe the prince is involved somehow in all of this. The only thing that I don't understand is why she waited 5 years to return... It's a long time.

I've seen some comment spoilers around but it turns out the real one was poisoned she survived but was extremely weak so while they were trying to heal her they used Elena to take her place. I think they never found out who tried to kill the original (not sure ) but that's another reason why they had Elena take her place to use her as a shield just encase Veronica's assassins came back so they would kill Elena inside.

Whoa all these theories really do make sense but I’m just upset in the end she died. I mean they should have been like “Hey thanks for taking the place of Veronica. Here’s some gold and some land, you can kindly fuck off now”. Yeah obviously they’re not the greatest people but killing her? I can see why they would want to erase her existence because she knew all these secrets of the family/can expose them but poor home girl was trying her best.
