" I find the author, Akimi Yoshida’s, interviews interesting, but I take them lightly because she contradicts herself. In one interview she states that Ash ‘Isn’t gay” and ‘would have ended up with a female Blanca’, if him and Eiji had went to Japan together they ‘would have eventually parted ways’. In a different interview she states that Ash is a ‘Power Bottom” and that Eiji is a ‘surprise top’. I don’t have the dates for these interviews, so I don’t know what came first, but that is quite a spectrum of interpretations for a couple of her own creation. BF was published over thirty years ago, and it makes sense her opinions would change, but actual content of the canon work doesn’t change."
it's from a post of trashayfanfication tumblr.
As decent as the plot was there are elements of Ash’s sexual abuse and trauma that read more as tragedy porn than properly researched. I remember this was heavy a complaint once upon a time for a minority of readers but the author as well as the more BL focused majority of readers have taken this aspect of the story to define Ash’s sexuality and sexual desires and it makes me very uncomfortable. Ash’s never got to experience even close platonic intimacy with another person before they were either killed or negatively impacted for being close to Ash. Sex would the farthest thing from his mind as a multiple rape victim given his personality let alone without years of therapy willingly want to bottom. though you could argue Eiji might be an exception after time as a sign of vulnerability and trust. Even then that might never happen. Given what Ash has gone through extensively in Banana Fish it’s one of the mangas I feel is worse off when a doujinshi is made to sexualize the characters, often ignoring or romanticizing the core trauma of the characters and how Ash’s and Eiji ‘s platonic love a lover that didn’t comet with strings or being used was a an oasis to Ash.
Yes I agree with you and I really don't like to read banana fish smuts since I feel like Ash and Eiji's bond is far from sexual stuff. I mean... If their situation was different then of course sex would be a normal thing for couple... But Ash needs something else from his most important person.
I just wanted to share what author's said.
i agree, i just wish the author had done more research across the board, that includes some the more colorful representations of American urban life lol, as a nyc area local, i just find some of it glaringly wrong but but it doesn't detract the manga is relatively good and very forward thinking given when it was written and it's subject matter
Why is it that everyone thinks eiji would be the uke when the creator confirmed if they were ever to have sex ash would be the bottom
