I agree, our MC is a bit careless, and a airhead (cf his drinking out of hand more than once) and from the start the inequality of the relationship is also his doing because he idolized his friend and wanted to be liked (nothing wrong with that, but certainly brought unbalance and expectation in different places)
I don’t see where the best friend controlling, the shape of this relationship has not been initiated by just one person, and our MC recognized himself he moulded himself into the other’s tastes to gain recognition
I don’t think anyone should be blamed for our it is or how it becomes, and it’s certainly short sighted to blame it all on the best friend too
