If you re-read the last, it tells you why the ending is the way it is. There's a lot of build-up to that final end. Here's one bit.

"So what happened to the king and the villagers?"
"That's not the point but...no matter the trials that life lays before us, and however much we get hurt and discouraged, we are gonna dance until the end."

I know what you're feeling though. I usually hate unresolved (and unhappy) endings. I want everyone to be ok and with the one they love. But in this case, the ending hurt but sat well with me. So many possiblities.

Did he and Dai live happily ever after?
    Was Dai already dead?
Was the guy in the cabin Dai?
Did he find Dai, only for Dai to live a short life?

So many more possibilities too. On this latest re-read, I thought 'what if that guy is Dai, but Dai blinded himself to punish himself for what he did to the teacher? That's why he couldn't show his eyes. The flashes of the life the stranger was describing also looked a little like a psych hospital.'
