It's true that the father doesn't hit Daejong, but he does abuse her emotionally and psychologically by using Chulsoo and her against each other. Remember, if Daejong does something wrong, or just something the father doesn't like, Chulsoo is the one to be beaten for her "mistakes". Because of this, Daejong ends up hating herself more than the father, because she thinks it's her fault that Chulsoo gets hurt all the time....

Theoretically, I'm sure the Father was hoping that this tactic would make Chulsoo hate Daejong too, since he's being hurt for things he didn't do, or at least he expected Chulsoo to work harder to "keep her in line"....But so far, they seem to be persevering through it all~ I hope they remain close.
