I don't believe he was ever addicted to alcohol, he just drank before because he had nothing better to do.

It's impossible to overcome alcohol addiction so quickly and without experiencing withdrawal. He may have lived as a drunk but he wasn't addicted.
He did have a bad habit of using alcohol as a coping mechanism (a good example is when he got drunk after being "rejected" by his teacher for the first time) but he never experienced cravings like an addict does.
