I DON'T feel sorry for him. What he felt for her was NOT love, it was OBSESSION. Had he TRULY loved her, he would NOT have hired a bunch of nameless goons to attack her, so he could be the "hero." He also showed complete lack of guilt over what he did, including getting drunk, while knowing she would be attacked, and LAUGHING and BRAGGING about being the "HERO." As well as being completely blasé about his proposal, AGAIN, without a SHRED of guilt. The man was a PSYCHOPATH. He only felt bad when he realized he had LOST and even then, he would rather kill himself than face the music. And that bit about having Alek take care of Fred? Betting he did that as PUNISHMENT. I have no doubt in my mind that he HONESTLY THOUGHT he was punishing Alek by having him have to take care of his own kid the way he took care of Alek's. PSYCOPATH.
And the fact that Alek KNEW that Jeff had set Luann up to be attacked, but didn't TELL HER, because he thought she loved Jeff, makes him just as bad! He KNEW what Jeff had done, but left her in the care of that Psycho!
